Limit Your Sugar

We all know the disadvantages of sugar and how bad it is for you but now the American Heart Association is urging consumers to seriously cut back on the amount of sugar they get from foods such as soft drinks, cookies and ice cream.  You may not think you are consuming that much sugar but you know there have been times when you have had all three of these foods in one day.

Studies show that women should limit their sugar intake to 100 calories, or about six teaspoons, a day; for men, 150 calories, or nine teaspoons.  Sound like a lot?  Just one 12-ounce can of cola has about 130 calories, or eight teaspoons of sugar.  One soda and you’ve reached or passed your daily sugar allowance.

A national survey has shown that Americans consume on average 355 calories, or more than 22 teaspoons, of sugar a day.  That’s just crazy.  Our bodies are not meant or designed to process so much sugar.  That is why we have an obesity and diabetic epidemic.

The American Heart Association has continually warned us to watch our sugar intake but now it is suggesting specific limits.  These limits apply to what are known as added sugars - those that are added to foods during manufacturing, or by consumers.  They do not include sugar that occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other foods.

I urge you to keep track of your sugar intake.  You may not realize all the sugar you are eating.  It’s mostly found in soft drinks, candy, desserts such as cakes and cookies, fruit drinks and sweetened dairy products, including ice cream and yogurt.  Don’t forget that sugar in alcoholic beverages also counts as added sugar.  All these added sugars do not give you any health benefit whatsoever.  All they do for you is add calories.
